{SMB}: 20 Ways an AZ Summer = a MN Winter!

My August contribution to Scottsdale Mom's Blog.
I think it's interesting (and comical) to note that within 24 hours, this became the 4th highest viewed post in SMB history.  I guess there are a LOT of people in my area who can relate!

UPDATE:  As referenced here, this post was published January 2015 on the Huffington Post in a slightly amended version (since it was by then winter, of course).  Kind of fun!

Our family moved to Phoenix from southeast Minnesota 1 year ago, making THIS our first full AZ summer — and all I can say is Holy Moley. This desert dwelling thing is no joke!

If you find yourself in Phoenix sweating summer or in Minnesota braving winter, you’ll surely relate to these parallels

… and you have my heartfelt sympathies, complete with a giant albeit sweaty {you’re welcome} hug!!

1. Your utility bills are unbelievably astronomically fourletterwordworthily super high.
2. You duck your head and dart quick-as-lightening from your car to the nearest building. Any building.
3. You dare not seat your toddler in a shopping cart that has spent more than 4 consecutive minutes outside.
4. Two words: Cabin Fever. “If only we could go to a park!”
5. Two more words: Weight Gain. For them, it’s baked goods and cocoa; for us, it’s beer and ice cream. But the outcome is the same…
6. You open wide the vents and run your car for 15 minutes before entering.
7. It’s 4 months long, if you’re lucky.
8. You long for 50 degrees.
9. Anyone who can leave town, does, making your neighborhood a veritable ghost town.
10. Standing in a parking lot, buckling your child into his car seat becomes the single most miserable physical experience of both of your lives.
11. You go to great lengths to park under some kind of structure/awning/sizable vegetation.
12. It takes ffffoooorrrreeevvvveerrrrr to leave the house.  If it isn’t coats, mittens, socks and boots, it’s sunblock applied, water bottles filled, hats secured and more sunblock applied because maybe your mom is an oncology nurse and you have red hair and therefore boast zero tanability. (Or is that just at our house?)
13. You find yourself lingering near heat- or cold-producing appliances.
14. Anything with a drive thru becomes “Gourmet” in your mind.
15. You wouldn’t be caught dead outside without shoes. Or if you were caught, you would probably be dead.
16. Some of the most harrowing images you can conjure involve having car trouble and no cell service.
17. The presiding topics of conversation become anticipated travel plans, recently embarked upon travel excursions, and dreams of some-day travel ventures.
18. The community motto becomes “Why Is It, Again, That We Live Here?”
19. You quickly exhaust any and all possible indoor entertainment options for kids.
20. You stop checking the weather forecast, realizing it’s only going to be “VERY HOT” or “VERY COLD”.
*****

These being said, we in Arizona might have a leg up.
“Why,” you ask?

Because one fact remains (say it with me!):

You can’t shovel sunshine!

*This post is dedicated to all of my beloved MN friends. You didn’t unfriend me when I posted with nauseating frequency scads of gorgeous Arizona winter weather Facebook photos. I now must suffer in kind as my feed is filled daily with images of your lakes and your gardens and your beautiful green outsideness. I have tasted my own medicine, and it is bitter. You win the weather war……… until January!!

Ice Bucket and Swimming with Friends

Maggie and Carolyn were introduced to me by Krista.  It's funny -- all of our husbands trained at Mayo Rochester at the same time, we even moved away at the same time, but almost none of us knew each other when we lived there (Maggie and Carolyn are the exception).  Now that we have all moved across the country, our paths have crossed and we love hanging out!

For the curious, Maggie's hub (neurologist) is doing his second fellowship, Carolyn's hub (peds anesthesia) is newly on staff at Children's Hospital.  Krista's hub (dermatology) is doing residency at Mayo Scottsdale (went to med school in Rochester).

Anyway, we're all Rochester-grade people - easy to spot in Scottsdale - and it's been wonderful getting to know them and spend time together.

Maggie and I succumbed to this ALS ice bucket thing recently.  I posted the original video on Facebook, per the challenge instructions, but then Maggie sent me the second half in reverse.  And I collapse in peals of laughter every time I watch it (which is every day since we did it).  :)  You're welcome.
PS - That water was reeeeeeeally cold!

**If getting this via email, view the actual blog to watch the videos.

Sadly Krista couldn't join us, as she was doing grown up things like working on homeschool lesson plans (she is so grown up).  Or at least that's what she claimed............ ;)

Back to the beginning of their arrival that morning ---
As usual, Khaki managed to be the star of the show - especially to Ella.
Ella (Maggie) and Kate (Carolyn)

Scarlett got a little more brave when she saw these 4 years olds are more gentle than most...

 Scarlett, giving Kate a sniffing-over.
Maggie came with donuts in tow.  Brilliant!!  This was Nolan's first donut experience, and it was gone in 2 seconds.
 Dominic (Maggie) - 2yr
 Too busy to smile
 Carolyn and Maggie!
 Setting the stage

 That's a lot of ice!
After we upheld our challenge duties, we all had fun swimming.  With this many kids, it was impossible to snap any pics --- we were too concerned with making sure each little person was accounted for.  And with Nolan's bravery in the water, you can't avert your eyes for a second!

I threw together some PBJ's for the kids and we moms had some fruit, cheese and crackers.  Pretty tasty on a hot day of swimming.

Dominick pounded a whole sandwich.  Nolan, who is usually an avid supporter of PBJ's and grapes, didn't want N-E-THING to do with it and instead wanted to crunch on the ice.  He was obsessed!  Every time he would run out, he would yell, "IIIIIIIIE! IIIIIIIE!!" and go wandering off to find another piece.  And so he had ice for lunch.  Whatever.

 "Nummy."

These two cute girls didn't even want to come up for lunch.  They just played and played in the splash zone and reminded me how much I loooooove this pool!

Before everyone took off, Khaki had to show her stuff.  The visiting kids were thoroughly, thoroughly entertained and took turns throwing Khaki's toy for her.
Nolan meanwhile concerned himself with the quickly melting pile of ice that remained.
 Khaki is so funny!

She slept for the rest of the afternoon.
Ella was very concerned that Khaki was shivering when we went back inside and wrapped her in her towel.  Such a sweet girl!

So glad you guys came over -- and Maggie, I'm glad I had you for misery-company!  We made a great memory.  Looking forward to next time!

Rochester, Part 4

Lastly came Thursday, our final day in Roch, but a day filled with treats.
We all woke up, devoured breakfast and made the short walk to a nearby park.

Treat #1: This view of a giant MN sky from Rachel's beautiful street!
(Nolan again with the sand...)
Treat #2: More outsideness.  :)
Rachel, you are really amazing!
Sadly, even while at a park, there sometimes has to be a time-out...
...or two.
Kaia and a friend.  What sweet girls!
Treat #3 came after Nolan's nap and it was a big one: We paid a visit to the Saski Seven!
Let me see...... How to describe Karmen?.......... Karmen is --- well -- indescribable.  She's a musical guru, an organizational wizard, a mom of FIVE GIRLS YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT, a homeschooling super mom, and an all incredible woman.  She has a sense of humor (obviously.) and a faith and discipline I have always admired.  Karmen, I miss you!!  I miss Calvary, I miss choir, I miss being jealous of the altos....  I just miss you.
Maria has always been sooo sweet with Nolan - ever since he was itty bitty.
This visit was especially sweet because Nolan and I got to meet Chelley and Naika, for whom our family was among legions of prayer warriors.  When we moved last summer, the Saskis were neck-deep in their adoption proceedings, and they were joyfully able to bring these girls home just a few months later.  It was so wonderful to see them in person and get to talk with them!

Chelley has a million dollar smile, doesn't she?
And sweet little Naika

Annika and Chelley showing us their bike riding skills.

I feel like I could devote a whole blog post to Olivia and Naika.  So stinking cute.

Oh, Karmen, your hands are so much fuller than I even realized!

HA!!  I die!
Nolan made himself right at home.
Tragically, this is the most up-close photo I got of Annika -- what a shame!  Annika, I'm going to have to pay you another visit just so I can take your pretty picture.  :)  There was just too much going on to keep up with it all, I guess!
Saskis, thank you so much for letting us swing by.  Like I said: A treat!!

Treat #4 was a completely unannounced stop at Trista's house.  Trista is a friend from good old Station 4-4.  Since I didn't get time to go by the floor, and since Karmen lives about 5 minutes from Trista, I couldn't resist knocking on her door.  Sadly for me, her little Asher was fast asleep having gotten his shots that morning -- but at least I got to peek at him in his crib.  I'll squeeze him next time!
I love friends like this who you see once in a blue moon but then you don't skip a beat.
And Treat #5.  I know you didn't think I could come to Rochester and not have me some Flapdoodles salted caramel ice cream.
They have a drive through (which was the best and worst thing about them when I lived there), so it made it easy to pick some up and take enough for the whole crew at Rachel's.
Hans is as much of a fan as I am, and I wasn't about to let his post-lawnmowing stinkiness keep me from diving in alongside...  Hans, this was not treat #6.
*****
Finally, it was time to dash to the airport.

Ladies, this was epic.  So wonderful.  You are all too much for me.
Rachel, thank you especially once more for all that you did.  You are the best ever hostess!

*****
Nolan did great on the flights and slept super hard in his big bed.  The next morning at his first peep, a couple of someones dashed in to greet him.  Do you think he was missed???

Can't wait for our next reunion!!
